Irish language secondary schools academic success speaks for itself

Rath na n-iarbhunscoileanna lán-Ghaeilge léirithe sna torthaí acadúla

In this year’s Sunday Times survey of secondary schools, 721 schools were ranked based on the percentage of leaving cert students continuing into third level education.  36 of these were Irish language schools. Sa Sunday Times i mbliana, rangaíodh 721 scoil de réir líon na ndaltaí ardteistiméireachta a lean ar aghaidh chuig oideachas tríú leibhéal. Ba scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge 36 díobh seo.
Laurel Hill Colaiste FCJ in Limerick was ranked no.1 in Ireland above all English medium schools. 60% of the pupils in this school came from English speaking primary schools. Rangaíodh Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ mar uimhir 1 sa tír os comhair na scoileanna Béarla ar fad. Tháinig 60% de dhaltaí na scoile seo ó bhunscoil Béarla. Three of the Top 10 overall schools in Ireland were Gaelcholaistí – the other seven were fee paying private schools. Ba Ghaelcholáistí trí chinn den deich scoil is fearr in Éirinn- ba scoileanna príobháideacha le táille an seacht scoil eile. Gaelcholaisti topped the lists in Leinster (Colaiste Iosagain), Munster (Laurel Hill Colaiste FCJ), Connaught (Colaiste na Coirbe) and Ulster (Colaiste Ailigh). D’éirigh le Gaelcholáiste barr an liosta a shroicheadh i gCúige Laighean (Colaiste Íosagáin), Cúige Mumhan (Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ), Cúige Chonnacht (Coláiste na Coirbe) agus Cuige Uladh (Coláiste Ailigh). The top five co-educational schools in the country are all Irish language schools. Is scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge iad an cúig scoil comhoideachais is fearr sa tír.

Our Goal

We aim to successfully persuade the Department of Education to adequately meet the needs of our area through the establishment of a Gaelcholaiste by 2017/18 to cater for the many students in the area who wish to continue their education through the medium of Irish. Tá sé mar aidhm againn cur ina luí ar an Roinn Oideachais freagairt do riachtanais an cheantair agus Gaelcholáiste a bhunú faoi 2017/18 le freastail ar an iliomad páistí áitiúla a theastaíonn uathu leanúint leis an oideachas trí mheán na Gaeilge.

ACHIEVING OUR GOAL – AN AIDHM A CHUR I GCRÍCH

We will be submitting a proposal to the Department of Education outlining why the establishment of a Gaelcholaiste is important for our children and our locality. Critical to this we will seek to impress on the Department of Education that this is a broadly based proposal that has the backing of all sections of our community. Beimid ag cur aighneacht os comhair an Roinn Oideachais ina gcuirfear síos ar na cúiseanna go bhfuil tábhacht le Gaelcholáiste dár bpáistí agus ár gceantar. Tá sé tábhachtach dúinn go léirímid don Roinn Oideachais gur aighneacht leathan í seo le tacaíocht ó chuile chuid den phobal. We aim do this by collecting expressions of interest from as many families as possible interested in their children attending a local Irish medium secondary school  or who would simply like to have the choice of a local Gaelcholaiste for their children. Tá sé i gceist againn tacaíocht an phobail a léiriú trí fhoirmeacha léiriú suime a bhailiú ón líon is mó clainne agus gur féidir. Tá an fhoirm ann d’éinne gur mian leo a bpáistí a chur chuig iarbhunscoil lán-Ghaeilge áitiúil nó gur mian leo rogha a bheith ann a bpáistí a chur ag Gaelcholáiste. Others may express an interest purely to see the many other cultural and educational benefits a Gaelcholaiste would bring to the wider community. D’fhéadfadh daoine eile suim a léiriú díreach toisc na buntáistí cultúrtha agus oideachasúla eile a thiocfadh ón nGaelcholáiste sa cheantar.
